In a bid to advance electrification efforts at the sub-national level, the Nigeria Electrification Programme (NEP) today received the Special Adviser to Ondo State Governor on power Engr. Dr. Jonson Jayeola. Alabi on a courtesy and familiarization visit to the NEP Project Management Office, Abuja.
The visit provided an opportunity for strategic engagement on how Ondo State can leverage NEP’s renewable energy frameworks to power underserved communities across the State particularly under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) project.
Welcoming the delegation, Olufemi Akinyelure, Head, Nigeria Electrification Programme (NEP), noted that the visit marks a meaningful step toward strengthening state-level collaboration under the Electricity Act. He emphasized that Ondo State has the potential to leverage existing frameworks within NEP to power underserved communities through clean and sustainable energy solutions.
During the engagement, the NEP team presented an overview of the programme’s key components, including the Solar Hybrid Mini-Grid, Standalone Solar Systems (SAS), Productive Use of Energy (PUE), and the Energizing Education Programme (EEP) Phases II and III. The team also shared insights from ongoing pilot projects, such as the Public Institutions Rooftop Solar Initiative currently being deployed in Lagos.
Impressed by the scope and impact of the programmes, Engr. Alabi commended the team and expressed readiness of the State government to collaborate with REA for expansion of the initiative to Ondo State. He also committed to briefing the State Governor on REA’s outstanding work in catalyzing the electricity market across the nation through renewable power project.
The visit reflects REA-NEP’s ongoing efforts to deepen engagement with state governments, foster local ownership, and expand the reach of sustainable electrification across Nigeria.
